Loyalty for gyms & studios: reward the streak, keep the member
Attendance is retention. A visible stamp card does what your billing system cannot — it makes the habit feel like progress.
Members don't cancel memberships. They cancel habits.
The cancellation email arrives in month 2, but the decision happened in week 3 — the first week they didn't show up. Billing software sees none of this. The retention lever isn't the contract; it's making every visit feel like progress toward something.
Why a stamp card, in a gym?
Because streaks are the strongest habit mechanic there is, and a stamp card is a streak made visible. "12 classes → a free guest pass" reframes attendance from obligation to accumulation. It's the same psychology fitness apps sell back to you as "achievements" — except it lives at your front desk and rewards visits to your studio.
Picking the target and reward
- Target: ~4 weeks of good attendance. For a 3×/week member that's 12 stamps; for a weekly yoga class, 4–6.
- Reward: something that deepens the habit — a guest pass (brings a friend = social lock-in), a branded towel or bottle (identity), a free class pack (more visits). Avoid discounting the membership itself.
- Reset and repeat. The card resets after the reward. The streak continues.
Operationally near-zero
A QR at the desk; members scan in as they arrive, or the desk scans them. No fob hardware, no member app, no integration with your billing platform — this sits next to it as the visible layer.
